The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 has witnessed some outstanding performances by the bowlers, and the bowlers are trying their best to get to the top of the Purple Cap list. Before the match between Mumbai Indians Women and Gujarat Giants, Saika Ishaque (12), Shikha Pandey (8), and Sophie Ecclestone (8) held the top three positions on the leading wicket-takers list.

Despite going wicketless in the match against the Giants, Mumbai’s Saika Ishaque has managed to retain her top spot on the list with 12 wickets to her name. She finished wicketless for the first time in the tournament, conceding 13 runs in her three overs today.

She is being closely followed by MI all-rounder Hayley Matthews. Matthews picked up three wickets for 23 runs against Gujarat Giants, pushing Shikha Pandey and Sophie Ecclestone down by one spot each. With that, she has become only the second bowler to reach double figures in terms of wickets in WPL 2023. Hayley Matthews is currently the MVP of the tournament, with 138 points to her name.

Amelia Kerr, who also had a great outing with the ball against Gujarat Giants, picked up two wickets for 18 runs in her four overs and has moved up to the fifth position with eight wickets to her name.

MI’s dominance with the ball was reflected in the WPL Purple Cap list as well, with Nat Sciver-Brunt breaking into the top ten with six wickets to her name. Sciver-Brunt had a fun time terrorizing the batter today, picking up three wickets against Gujarat Giants. She is currently tied with Gujarat’s Kim Garth for the 9th spot. Garth, who ended up on the losing side, picked up just one wicket in her four overs today.

Gujarat’s Ashleigh Gardener, who picked up 3 for 34 in her overs today, has also broken into the top 10. She is currently tied for the sixth spot with Delhi’s Tara Norris for the sixth spot and has 7 wickets to her name. UP’s Sophie Ecclestone will have a chance to alleviate her position in the list when she will take the field to face RCB tomorrow.
