Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) succumbed to their fifth defeat in as many matches in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023. They went down to Delhi Capitals (DC) by six wickets in match number 11 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Monday, March 13.
Delhi inserted Bangalore into bat after winning the toss. However, skipper Smriti Mandhana fell cheaply again as she was dismissed for 8 off 15 balls. Sophie Devine (21 off 19) and Heather Knight (11) were also back in the hut without making too much of a contribution. At 63/3 in the 13th over, it seemed the same old story all over again.
Ellyse Perry (67 off 52) and Richa Ghosh (37 off 16) ensured it wasn’t. They added 74 for the fourth wicket in super quick time to give RCB a lift. Perry hit four fours and five sixes, while Ghosh struck three fours and as many sixes. Seventy runs came off the last five overs and Bangalore went from 80/3 to 150/4.
RCB’s total, however, wasn’t enough to stop Delhi Capitals from marching to another victory. Delhi lost Shafali Verma for a golden duck as she was bowled by Megan Schutt for a golden duck. Delhi captain Meg Lanning (15 off 18) also struggled for a change. Alice Capsey’s 38 off 24 balls kept DC in the hunt.
Jemimah Rodrigues (32 off 28) and Marizanne Kapp (32 not out off 32) played good hands, but it was Jess Jonassen (29 not out off 15) who lifted Delhi to victory. The side needed nine in the last over and Jonassen smashed Renuka Singh for a six and a four to confirm victory for Delhi.
Speaking after the win DC captain Lanning admitted that things got close in the end. She said, “JJ and Kappy did an excellent job to keep their composure. We got ahead and RCB bowled well to come back, nice to get over the line. It would have been nice to finish it earlier but the wicket got slower. Having two experienced batters at the end helped.”
Praising the team’s effort, she added, “We just executed really well, if you hit a good length, that’s the most effective way to bowl. A lot to learn from this game. To get a win under pressure will do wonders for our team.”
