Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by nine wickets in match number 18 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 match at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Monday, March 20. With the win, DC displaced MI from the top spot in the points table on the basis of a better net run rate

Delhi bowled first after Meg Lanning won the toss and put up a commanding show to restrict a strong Mumbai batting line-up to 109/8. Marizanne Kapp (2/13), Shikha Pandey (2/21) and Jess Jonassen (2/25) all came up with excellent bowling efforts.

Kapp struck early for Delhi. She had Yastika Bhatia caught behind for 1, while Nat Sciver-Brunt was bowled for a golden duck. A superb catch by Jemimah Rodrigues at wide mid-on off Shikha Pandey’s bowling ended Hayley Matthews’ stay for 5. Mathews played a whip stroke, only for Rodrigues to take a stunner.

Amelia Kerr (8) was next to go, caught behind off Arundhati Reddy. Pooja Vastrakar scored 26 off 19. She hit three fours and a six before falling to Jonassen, looking for one big hit too many. MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur hung around for 23, but could not convert her start into a big score. She was caught at deep midwicket off Pandey’s bowling. Issy Wong (23 off 24) and Amanjot Kaur (19 off 16) batted patiently and ensured that Mumbai at least crossed 100.

Chasing 110, Delhi needed only nine overs to reach the target. Captain Meg Lanning (32 not out off 22) and Shafali Verma (33 off 15) added 56 runs for the opening wicket in 4.3 overs. Shafali struck six fours and a six before being stumped off Matthews.

Alice Capsey (38 not out off 17) then came in and clobbered one four and as many as five sixes – three of her sixes came in one over from Matthews. The aggressive batter struck Saika Ishaque for two sixes and a four as Delhi raced to victory with 66 balls to spare.

Speaking about the dominating win, Delhi skipper Lanning commented, “It was a great game, hard to fault much. We got off well with the bowl, Kapp got us to a great start again and to chase down like that was brilliant.

On Player of the Match Kapp, she added, “She’s very talented, always eager to play well and to see her perform so well, very pleased for her. I think the bowler’s did it for us tonight, to restrict them to about 100 was great.”
