LPL 2023 Schedule Announced; Tournament to clash with Hundred and MLC

On Monday, March 27, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) announced that the fourth season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will start on July 31 and last through August 22. It’s interesting to note that the governing board originally thought the tournament should take place between July and August, but this has never happened in the competition’s history. LPL will therefore be played for the first time in these two months, assuming all goes as planned.

Tournament Director said

“We have decided to hold the tournament during July and August this year, as conducting the tournament during this period gives us the best possible opportunity to attract top international talent and also suits well with Sri Lanka’s international cricket calendar,” LPL tournament director Samantha Dodanwela was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

The Major League Cricket (MLC) competition in the USA and The Hundred in England, however, will operate at almost the same time, thus LPL franchisees might have trouble finding top-tier international cricketers to sign for the upcoming season. Nonetheless, the organizing committee expressed their expectation that the competition will be a success and gave the rationale for hosting LPL.

The five-team tournament, meanwhile, will take place over three locations, most likely Kandy, Hambantota, and Colombo, identical to the previous season. Each team is allowed to sign a maximum of 20 players, of whom 14 must be locals and the remaining six cricketers may be foreigners.

LPL 2022 winner

On Friday, December 23, Jaffna Kings made history by defeating Colombo Stars by two wickets and winning the Lanka Premier League (LPL) championship for the third straight year. Colombo Stars, headed by Angelo Matthews, produced 163/5 in 20 overs in the LPL 2022 championship match before Jaffna Kings reached the mark in 19.2 overs. Being the second team to bat, the Kings got off to a strong start as openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Avishka Fernando sent all of the poor balls to the boundary line. After scoring 36 runs off 18 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes, Gurbaz returned to the Pavilion.
