New Zealand registered their third consecutive win in the 2023 World Cup, hammering Bangladesh by eight wickets in match number 11 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, October 13. Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, the Kiwis held Bangladesh to 245/9 in their 50 overs as Lockie Ferguson claimed 3/49, while Trent Boult and Matt Henry chipped in with two wickets each. In the chase, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson struck a fluent 78 on comeback before retiring hurt, while Daryl Mitchell bludgeoned an unbeaten 89 off 67 balls.

Bangladesh got off to the worst possible start with the bat as Litton Das (0) chipped the first ball of the match from Trent Boult to fine leg. Tanzid Hasan (16) was the next to go, flicking Ferguson to square leg. Bangladesh suffered a third big blow when Mehidy Hasan Miraz (30) miscued a pull off Ferguson and top-edged the ball to fine leg.

Najmul Hossain Shanto (7) also fell cheaply, chipping a catch off Glenn Phillips to the right of midwicket. The experienced duo of Mushfiqur Rahim (66 off 75) and skipper Shakib Al Hasan (40 off 51) added 96 runs for the fifth wicket to give the Bangladesh innings a boost. The stand was broken when Shakib miscued a short ball off Ferguson and was brilliantly caught by a diving Tom Latham.

Rahim was cleaned up by Henry with one that kept low and beat the batter. A fine knock from the experienced Mahmudullah (41 not out off 49) ensured Bangladesh finished with 245.

In the chase, New Zealand lost Rachin Ravindra for 9 as he flirted at one outside off stump from Mustafizur Rahman. However, Devon Conway (45 off 59) and Williamson (78 off 107) put the Kiwis on the path to victory, adding 80 runs for the second wicket.

The partnership was broken when Conway fell lbw to Shakib, missing his reverse paddle. Williamson and Mitchell, though, carried on the good work for New Zealand. The Kiwis skipper stuck eight fours and one six in his half-century on comeback before being forced to retire hurt after receiving a blow on the thumb. At the other end, Mitchel hammered six fours and four sixes. The winning runs also came via a maximum as Mitchell launched Shoriful Islam over the ropes in the 43rd over.
